Quality over quantity:
1939 Maybach DS 8 "Zeppelin"

← Back to the overview

This Maybach Zeppelin was fitted with a Pullman saloon body with a glass partition by the company Spohn in Ravensburg. The design of the body indicates that the car was constructed towards the end of the 1930s or early 1940s. This Maybach was probably delivered to Central or East Germany as it was confiscated by the Red Army after the end of World War II and taken to the former Soviet Union. This once very prestigious and elegant car was used there as a bus and worn out by its frequent trips. Faulty components were replaced with Russian spare parts, such as the powerful twelve-cylinder engine with eight liters of displacement and an output of 200 hp, the front and rear axles, the transmission, rims, steering, radiator and the dashboard. The severe damage to the bodywork caused by accidents was only ever repaired in a makeshift manner.

The fact that this Maybach Zeppelin was in continuous use under difficult conditions and was able to withstand the immense strain speaks for the quality of a Maybach automobile.

The Maybach Zeppelin returned to Germany in 1992 and is now hoping to be restored to its former glory sometime soon.
